C&R Council Candidates Christine Fletcher and Mark Pervan Support Community-Led Outcome for Speedway

Aug 18, 2025

Communities and Residents (C&R) Ward Councillor candidates for Albert-Eden-Puketāpapa, Christine Fletcher, QSO, and Mark Pervan, are proud to stand alongside the community in supporting a democratic solution for the future of Western Springs Speedway.

In 2024, Auckland Council announced that it would not be renewing speedway’s lease to run race meetings at Western Springs after March 2025. Instead, Auckland Council has facilitated a move to ground sharing racing facilities with Auckland Stock Car Club at Waikaraka Park in Onehunga.

In response to the move by Council, C&R carried out an in-depth survey of Aucklanders asking for their views on the future of the motorsport at the arena. Over 95% of respondents indicated that they were opposed to the speedway’s closure – a clear show of support.

C&R recognises that the speedway has been an iconic part of Auckland’s cultural and sporting landscape for almost a century, and believes its future should be shaped by those who know and value it most – the community.

Fletcher and Pervan, in partnership with the Western Springs Speedway Association, urge Auckland Council to engage in a more transparent and community-led planning process for Western Springs Speedway, favouring greater consultation and for speedway to remain at its current venue, with upgrades to bring it up to international standards.

Aucklanders have spoken – Western Springs Speedway is a part of Auckland’s identity and must remain where it belongs.

This position also has the support of C&R’s candidates standing for the Waitematā Local Board, whose area includes Western Springs Speedway.
